What is Thyme?
Thyme is a fragrant, annual or perennial herbaceous plant in shrub form belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Members of this family are used in the perfume industry, aromatherapy, phytotherapy and pharmacological applications due to their essential oil-rich content.
It grows on grassy field shores, forest edges, meadows, and in rocky and mountainous areas where the soil is warm because it likes the sun. Thyme plant can be found naturally in Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, France, South Africa, Portugal, Bulgaria, Italy, Chile, Syria and Mexico in the world.
There are five genera in Turkey named Thymus, Satureja, Tymbra, Origanum and Coridothymus. These breeds are generally distributed in the provinces of Denizli, Manisa, Hatay, Antalya, Aydın, Kütahya and Uşak. Origanum syriacum var. bevanii, or mountain thyme, is among the most important and commercially used species in Turkey. Mountain thyme grows naturally in the Southwest Mediterranean and Southeastern Anatolia, especially in Hatay, Mersin and Kahramanmaraş provinces. Mountain thyme, which is approximately 65-70 cm tall on average, is a medicinal plant that attracts attention with its benefits and rich essential oil content.
